About the Smart City Innovation Workshop at Iligan City
The Philippines - Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region 2 has been a champion of Smart and Sustainable Cities for several years, and supported Cauayan City and Isabela State University (ISU) in their efforts. In Jan 2019, DOST, Cauayan City and ISU signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Smart Cities Council and Smart Cities Network to build capabilities among the LGUs in the Cagayan Valley. In March 2021, the Cagayan Valley Smarter City Belt was launched with more capacity building activities among the 5 provinces.

In March 2023, DOST launched a national movement with the intent to target 81 LGUs to be developed as Smarter and Sustainable Cities. Iligan City approached the Chairman of Smart Cities Network to be their advisor.

This Smart City Innovation Workshop, tentatively held on 14th and 15th August 2023 at Iligan is one of the agreed Action Items. It aims to provide a catalyst for their Smart City Development with the following key stakeholders in Iligan – the LGU, DOST Region 10 and the Mindanao State University Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT). We will formalise the partnership with a few Catalyst Projects defined during this Workshop – to develop Innovation Districts in Iligan.
